Teddy Sheringham says Stevenage need to start seeing games out after an injury-time Jay Simpson goal handed Leyton Orient a point at Boro.

Simpson fired past Chris Day in the 93rd minute in Saturday’s 2-2 draw in a result that left Boro with just two points from a possible 12 over the Christmas period.

Against Crawley on Boxing Day Boro conceded a 90th minute winner, while the week before Christmas Billy Kee scored an 85th minute equaliser from the spot as Accrington Stanley denied Sheringham’s men all three points.

Stevenage were also beaten by Dagenham over Christmas, and Sheringham believes his side needs to learn how to see games out.

“You don’t want a chance falling to their main striker. He’s a proven goalscorer and as the ball rolled to him you thought ‘yeah, it’s going to be a goal’”, Sheringham said.

“From our point of view it’s that last five minute syndrome, which is very disappointing when you work so hard to get back into the game. [The last five minutes] is still part of the game. You’ve got to see the game out.”

Asked if the fans will be happy with an improved display from his side at the weekend, Sheringham said: “We were all very, very disappointed from the Christmas period.

“Will they be happy? I’m not sure. I’m not happy. We’ve ended up with two points from 12 when it should have been a lot better with how I feel we’re progressing.

“But it’s all part of the game. It’s not just about playing nicely with the football. It’s about being switched on at both ends and we need to work on it.”
