A NEW and improved household recycling scheme with extra parking has opened.

The household waste recycling centre in Caxton Way, Stevenage, is a joint venture between Hertfordshire County Council and Stevenage Borough Council.

The new site will replace the existing one in London Road.

It will have 18 compaction containers for general and green waste plus containers for recycling a wide range of materials, including cardboard, wood, scrap metal, paper, glass and plastic bottles, textiles, cans and foil.

The Caxton Way site will have increased capacity for parking, with space provided for 28 cars, enabling members of the public to offload bulky items more easily.

"While the actual prompt to find an alternative location was the planned redevelopment of the London Road site, we think that users will agree that Caxton Road is going to be a better set-up all round anyway," said executive member for planning, partnerships and waste, Derrick Ashley.

Stevenage Borough Council's executive councillor for environment and e-government Richard Henry said: "We were keen for the new centre to be more user friendly so that it is as easy as possible for people to recycle more of their waste."

Opening hours are 8am until 6pm between April 1 and September 30 and 8am until 4pm between October 1 and March 31.
