A waste company near Hitchin was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay full costs of £5,285 after being found guilty of deliberately breaching environmental regulations in burning the wrong type of waste.
Winters Haulage Ltd, based at Thirstley Lane in Gosmore, was found guilty by Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday after it deliberately received and sorted treated wood, burning it in breach of environmental regulations.
After the hearing, Environment Agency officer Jeremy Hay said: “There are strict rules around the burning of waste for no good reason. There are risks of pollution and harm to human health if the wrong waste is burned.”
