Police including armed officers and a helicopter swarmed Hitchin’s Westmill estate on Saturday to look for a man with a gun.

A member of the public called police on Saturday at 4.50pm and said a man was walking towards Redhill Road with a firearm.

Armed officers, a police helicopter and other police rushed to Redhill Road, closed it off and carried out a thorough search of the area – but the man described was not found.

Police said the force later received a report of “a child being seen carrying a toy gun in the local area”, but that it wasn’t clear whether this was connected.

Anyone with information should call police on the non-emergency number 101.
