A villager started a 135-mile walk in freezing weather today (Thursday) in his quest to raise funds for his local church.

John Inman, 47, of The Street, Wallington, started his trek from Canterbury back to the village where he is raising much needed funds for repairs to the roof at St Mary's Church.

Repairs to the leaking roof will cost 150,000 and Mr Inman is hoping to raise at least 1,500 on his epic journey.

"Too keep me warm I will be listening to the cricket, England's Test match against South Africa," said Mr Inman, who is a member of the parochial church council at St Mary's.

Mr Inman hopes to be joined by his children Helen, 11, and Matthew, nine, on Sunday when he hopes to have reached St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. He expects to arrive back in Wallington on Tuesday night.
