A RUNAWAY bull which brought chaos to part of Stevenage Old Town this morning (Thursday) has now been shot dead by police marksmen.

Officers were called around 9.20am after the bull had escaped from a nearby farm and was in a field next to busy Martins Way.

It was very agitated and had moved onto the dual carriageway, and then made its way to a nearby playing field. There were concerns for the safety of drivers so Martins Way was closed.

Speaking about the incident, Superintendent Nat Briant said: "These were very extreme circumstances and there were concerns that members of the public could have been in danger. Sadly, the animal was so distressed and agitated that, with the acceptance of the owner, we had to put it down in order to protect the public.
