A junior school was evacuated along with nearby residents in Knebworth this afternoon following a major gas leak.

Police were called at 12.45pm following the rupture of the gas main in St Martins Road in the grounds of St Martins Church and immediately placed a 200 metre cordon around the area including the primary school.

Local roads which were closed were St Martins Road, Gun Road, Stevenage Road and Watton Road and all were re-opened an hour after the incident.
