ANOTHER wave of vandalism has hit Potton during the past week causing concern to police and the town council.

At the weekend a number of windows were smashed in the council offices at the community centre in Brook End.

When staff arrived for work on Monday morning glass littered the floors and furniture inside offices.

Other buildings have also suffered smashed windows during the past week including both local schools, Burgoyne Middle School and Potton Lower School.

A total of almost 20 windows were smashed at the schools causing over £1,000 worth of damage. No attempt was made to enter either school.

"It is just senseless vandalism to damage schools or any other property," said Burgoyne Middle School headteacher David Birch.

"It is so pointless and we have never suffered this before during the 16 years I have been here.

"It saddens me when things like this happen because it is against the whole spirit of Potton which is a superb place."

A spokesman for Potton Middle School said over 10 windows were smashed including a fire door during two attacks on the school last week.

"Nine large panes of glass went on one night and the glass fire door and then we had more damage a few days later," said a school spokesman.

"It is really unnecessary and just eats into a school's budget."

The attack on the council offices comes in the wake of property being damaged and stolen from the recreation ground in recent weeks.

"It started with the toilets being damaged and then moved to the recreation ground where wood was broken and the slide stolen," said Potton Town Council clerk Val Moles.

"Now we have had windows smashed in the council offices last weekend so the trouble just goes on and on.

"Hopefully the police can get to grips with this problem to bring an end to it."

Beat constable Pc Ross Patterson has said he will intensify patrols in the town especially at night to try and speak to youths about vandalism or find those responsible for windows being smashed and other property being damaged in the town.
