PARENTS at a school which is continuously targeted by vandals are concerned it is affecting their children's safety.

Staff at Camps Hill Primary School in Stevenage said they are working closely with the police to stop the rise of vandalism at their school.

The fence surrounding the school and its play areas is broken in several places.

A mother, who has a son at the school but did not wish to be named, called The Comet to say: "I am really concerned about the state of the fence.

"People use it as a cut through and I don't think it is safe to have strangers walking through the school grounds. You just don't know who is around these days.

"I need to feel my children are being protected while they are at school. Money needs to be spent on security issues."

Headteacher Hillary Cliff agreed that the fence was in a poor state but denied that the children were not safe while at school.

She said: "We are regularly targeted by vandals, during the Easter holidays 23 windows were smashed. The fence is often broken and pulled down and our caretaker is always having to repair it."

She said a new more secure fence has been ordered and will be erected soon.

"We are doing all we can to sort out the situation and we are working closely with Stevenage police.
