Organisers of a fundraising initiative to support military charity Help for Heroes could be forced to cancel their event if more support is not found.

Staff at H&T Pawnbrokers in the Westgate Shopping Centre in Stevenage’s New Town hold up to five events a year to raise money for various charities, and are due to hold a tombola, teddy stall and cake sale at the store on Saturday.

But, despite widespread appeals on social media for donations of tombola prizes and teddies, only one item has so far been received.

Kayleigh Brown, an assistant at the pawnbrokers, said: “I thought, with it being a really well-known charity to support, people would get behind it, but they haven’t. It’s disheartening.

“We are still hoping to go ahead with it, but we will have to see how much has been donated by the end of Friday.”

Help for Heroes provides support to sick and injured war veterans. Kayleigh is particuarly keen to raise money for the charity because it provides support for her uncle, who has post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Northern Ireland during The Troubles.

Kayleigh said: “We want to give something back. All of the money raised will go to the charity, but prizes for the event are needed urgently. Please can anyone help? It’s for a great cause.”

If you can help, pop into the store with your donations before the end of Friday.
