DISTRICT councillors voted unanimously last night (Thursday) to abolish a town council.

All members of North Herts District Council agreed a final proposal to dissolve Letchworth Garden City Council with the decision to be made official in January.

The verdict comes after a survey saw three quarters of respondents in Letchworth GC vote in favour of abolition as part of a Community Governance Review into the town council’s future.

Supporters of the town council pleaded with district councillors before the vote to allow an election to take place next May, instead of dissolving the authority on March 31.

The district council was asked to carry out a review into the town council’s future by members of Help Eliminate Letchworth Parish council, which makes up 21 of the 24 current town councillors.
