A WELL-KNOWN and admired community figure has died.

Max McMurdo, former mayor of Sandy Town Council, died in Bedford Hospital on Monday, aged 72.

Mr McMurdo was a member of the town council for 16 years and also served on Mid Beds District Council.

He was chairman of the Sandy branch of the Royal British Legion and worked tirelessly to revive the group after numbers had dwindled drastically.

Ken Lynch, a fellow member of the branch, said: "He did an excellent job with the Royal British Legion. A few years ago there weren't many members but he worked extremely hard to keep the branch going. He built it up and now there are over 100 members. He was a tremendous worker and he will be greatly missed."

Mr McMurdo also set up a youth centre in Sandy town centre with his wife Agnes and was involved in the scouting movement.

He was still heavily involved in many activities in the town at the time of his death.

At a Sandy Town Council meeting on Monday, a minute's silence was held in memory of the man who gave so much back to the community.
