Plans to overhaul a town’s transport system targets drivers.

The Herts County and North Herts District councils’ scheme for Hitchin aims to improve public transport and promote alternative means of travel to “reduce reliance on cars”.

The Hitchin Urban Transport Plan includes proposals to improve pavements and bus access as well as enhancing the cycling network. Car sharing is also being promoted.

Hitchin residents will have the chance to view and comment on the proposals when they are exhibited on September 29 and October 2 at Hitchin Library.

Stuart Pile, highways and transport portfolio holder at County Hall, said: “We need to hear what residents think about our plans for improving transport in Hitchin, particularly where they think money should be spent. I hope that lots of people come along to have a look at the exhibition and ask questions about the things that concern or interest them.”

Council officers will be on hand at the exhibition which takes place between 3pm and 8pm on Wednesday and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday.

The plans and a questionnaire are also available at www.hertsdirect.org/hitchinutp or call Herts Highways on 0300 123 4047 for a hard copy.
