An appeal for witnesses has been launched after a crash on the A1(M) which has seen a man airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and the motorway shut for a number of hours.

Officers are appealing for information in the wake of the collision involving a lorry and a blue Ford Focus which occurred on the northbound between junctions 4 and 6 at about 9am.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a man in his 40s, has been flown to the Royal London Hospital with serious injuries, while the lorry driver was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage with minor injuries.

The motorway was initially shut in both directions although southbound is now fully reopened. The northbound carriageway is expected to follow suit within the hour.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact the Herts police non-emergency number 101, quoting ISR 132 of January 5.
