Two people were taken to hospital after a car overturned in Hitchin last night, with off-duty medical and emergency personnel stepping in at the scene.

The crash, in St Michael’s Road, happened at about 8.30pm and left a red Vauxhall Mokka wrecked on its side. Police said a blue Nissan Almera and blue Vauxhall Corsa were also involved in the collision.

Hitchin firefighters assisted off-duty staff from the fire and rescue service and Stevenage’s Lister Hospital before paramedics arrived. Nobody was trapped in the overturned car.

An ambulance service spokesman said an ambulance officer and two crews, a rapid response vehicle, a hazardous area response team and an East Anglian Air Ambulance attended the scene and treated two patients.

The road was closed until about 10pm. A man in his 20s with head injuries and a woman with abdominal pains were taken to Lister Hospital.
