A TANKER carrying liquid tar has spilt its load forcing a major Stevenage road to close this afternoon (Thursday).
The vehicle was travelling along the A602 in Stevenage from Watton-at-Stone when the bitumen was spilt.
The Broadhall Way dual carriageway was shut at 1.40pm between the junction with Shephall Way up to where Stevenage Football Club is situated and remains closed.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has used sand to clean up the liquid and a spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said it is hoped the road will reopen before rush hour.
