The road closure in Todds Green – which has caused gridlocked traffic in Stevenage and around the edge of Hitchin – has been extended until May 2.

Yesterday Herts County Council confirmed the gas works which have caused the closure – being carried out by Cadent Gas Limited – were expected to end today.

However, a spokesman from the council told the Comet this morning this has now been extended for a further week.

The closed route, on the outskirts of Stevenage, is a popular back route out of the town and towards Hitchin – avoiding the A602.

During rush hour on Monday night, large stretches of the A602, and Stevenage’s Gunnels Wood Road, Martins Way and North Road became gridlocked due to the closure.
