THE A1(M) has been shut this morning (Friday) after a collision involving a motorcyclist.

Emergency services were called at about 8.40am after a man on a motorbike collided with a silver Ford Focus just prior to the southbound exit sliproad at junction 3.

The motorcyclist received serious injuries and was first treated by an off-duty doctor, nurse and paramedic before a Herts Air Ambulance arrived to assist.

Ambulance crews from Letchworth GC, Hatfield and Welwyn GC also attended, and the man was taken to the QE2 Hospital in Welwyn GC.

The motorway has closed southbound from junctions 4-3 with traffic at a standstill going back to junction 7 for Stevenage.
