A man was rushed to hospital this morning after a serious crash on the A1(M) southbound near Welwyn and Stevenage that saw a car overturn.

Heavy traffic is building up after the crash near Junction 6 for Welwyn shortly before 6am, and police have closed a lane in addition to the exit slip road.

Ambulance crews and firefighters from Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City also rushed to the scene. One person was left trapped inside, and was freed by firefighters using cutting equipment before being taken to hospital with what police called “serious injuries”.

The ambulance service said it was thought the crash involved a single vehicle colliding with the central reservation, and said a single patient – a man thought to be in his 50s – was taken to Stevenage’s Lister Hospital in a stable condition, not thought to be life-threatening.

Queues stretched back all the way to Junction 8 for Stevenage, with delays of up to 45 minutes. Road policing officers and Herts Fire Control urged motorists to seek alternative routes.
