Police are appealing for information after a man exited a car while it was travelling along the A1(M) near Stevenage.
At around 7.45pm on Saturday, the man, in his late 20s, was travelling on the northbound carriageway in a white BMW.
Just before Junction 7 for Stevenage, he exited the car and came to rest on the hard shoulder, suffering a serious head injury.
He was take to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
Sergeant AJ Boddington, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: “We are currently working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or events leading up to it, to please come forward.”
