The driver had cuts to his head – which was bleeding – and was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage for treatment for minor injuries.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson, who attended the scene, said: “The man was very lucky indeed to have not received serious injuries as several wooden fence posts entered the car, narrowly missing the driver.”

Police, ambulance and fire crews were all called, and a rolling road closure was put in place just after junction 7 while debris was removed from the road.

The Jaguar was recovered by 9.30am.
