Emergency services were called just before 5am after reports that a silver Vauxhall Corsa had crashed in Offley Road in the town.

The car came to a halt outside a house along the A505 stretch, near to Moormead Close, after hitting two stationary vehicles and a brick wall.

A man was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage with a suspected neck injury – which an ambulance spokesman said was not believed to be life-threatening – before being arrested by police on suspicion of drink driving.

Offley Road was shut for more than five hours before reopening at 10.40am.
