A man in his 40s has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the A1(M) this morning.

The driver of a Ford Fiesta was cut free from his car by firefighters shortly before 10am following a crash an hour earlier involving a lorry on the northbound carriageway between Junction 4 for Hatfield and Junction 6 for Welwyn.

The man has since been flown to the Royal London Hospital and has a suspected pelvic injury, while the lorry driver also involved was said to be walking wounded.

The motorway was shut in both directions while an air ambulance landed, but two lanes of the southbound carriageway have now reopened and all trapped traffic has been able to leave the scene.

Northbound remains shut.
