Brand Street in Hitchin remains closed for safety reasons between Paynes Park and the High Street after a small sinkhole appeared in the road outside NatWest yesterday afternoon.
The depression has been surrounded by barriers while engineers work to fix the road. Part of Bancroft is also closed.
“Depressions in the ground like this are relatively common and are rarely serious,” a county council spokesman said.
“Our engineers are currently investigating the nature and cause of the issue, after which we will assess when the road can be safely reopened.
“We appreciate people’s patience in the meantime and apologise for any inconvenience.”
