Network Rail is set to carry out safety improvements at a level crossing in Shepreth next month as part of the company’s railway upgrade plan – and you can find information at a drop-in session later today.

From 10pm on Saturday, May 5, Shepreth level crossing in Station Road, and the road itself, will be closed until 8am on Monday, May 14, so that engineers can carry out the upgrade. The rail line will be closed on May 6 and 13.

During this time, work will be carried out to replace the half barriers at the level crossing with full barriers and CCTV. Traffic will be diverted via the A10 and Foxton level crossing to traverse the railway.

At these types of crossings, drivers should be prepared to stop at the crossing, understand the warnings and if the warnings activate, stop – unless it’s unsafe to do so. They should then remain stationary until all the warnings stop, and check that the exit is clear before driving across.

This will improve safety and reduce delays to train services at the crossing, which is used by 166 trains a day at up to 65mph. The current census data shows that nearly 2,300 vehicles pass over the crossing every day.

Meliha Duymaz from Network Rail said: “This is a key upgrade which will make this busy level crossing safer as part of our railway upgrade plan. I’d like to thank motorists and passengers for their patience while we carry out this important work.”

A public drop-in session will take place later today at Shepreth Village Hall in Station Road between 4.30pm and 7pm for anyone who would like to get more information.

A rail replacement service will run between Letchworth and Cambridge on Sunday, May 6, and Sunday, May 13. All London-to-Cambridge services will start and terminate at Letchworth, with a train shuttle service also operating between Cambridge and Kings Lynn. Passengers should check before they travel at
