Motorists are being told to avoid the area surrounding the A1(M) Letchworth Gate junction and the A505 after a crash involving a car and a pedestrian near to the motorway sliproad.
The collision occured earlier this evening close to the northbound slip at Junction 9.
The road is shut on approach to the Letchworth Gate roundabout from the A505 – with motorists not being allowed past the roundabout for Baldock.
There is also heavy traffic for those trying to head out of Letchworth towards the A1(M) junction, and northbound on the A1(M) itself – all the way back to Junction 7 for Stevenage.
Herts Highways said closures are “likely to remain in place for some time”, urging drivers to “please avoid the area and seek an alternative route”.
