A ROAD closure which is in place for the next three months is believed to be causing traffic delays in and around Hitchin this morning (Thursday).

Traffic has been at a standstill on routes from Hitchin to Stevenage and Letchworth GC, believed to be the result of a road closure on the A505 Cambridge Road.

A police spokesman said that no collisions had been reported and the delays were down to “sheer weight of traffic”.

Hertfordshire Highways began strengthening Walsworth Bridge on Monday with work expected to last until May 26, weather permitting.

The bridge is completely closed from the roundabout with St Michael’s Road to the entrance to The Millstream pub. Speaking earlier this week, Stuart Pile, Herts County Council executive member for highways and transport, said: “Some degree of disruption and delay will be inevitable, but this work is essential if we are to keep the bridge safe for drivers and pedestrians.”
