A motorist was thrown from his convertible when it rolled on the A505 between Baldock and Royston today – and has been taken to hospital with injuries all over his body, including his head and leg.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the BMW crashed on the eastbound carriageway near the Weston Hills tunnel at about 2.30pm, with police closing the road.

Firefighters from Baldock & Letchworth, Stevenage and Royston stations attended, with the ambulance service sending paramedics and an East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Baldock & Letchworth fire watch commander Julian Stanley told this paper: “We were called to a BMW convertible that had rolled and the driver was thrown from the vehicle.

“He was extremely lucky to escape alive. Injuries were all over his body but more severe on his head and leg.

“Police and ambulance crews were already in attendance when we arrived. He was in a lot of pain but was in a stable condition and able to talk.

“The air ambulance was called, who treated him, and he was then conveyed to hospital by the road ambulance.”

The Beds, Cambs and Herts Road Police unit tweeted a warning to motorists to avoid the stretch of road at 4.30pm.
