Emergency crews including the East Anglian Air Ambulance rushed to Swingate after the crash near the Ibis hotel shortly before 8.30am.

Paramedics, on the scene within five minutes, treated the male driver for what a spokesman described as ‘life-threatening injuries’, before taking him by road ambulance to Stevenage’s Lister Hospital ‘in a serious condition’.

The driver had been trapped in the car until being released at 9.23am.

Police and two fire engines, both from Stevenage, attended the scene, as did an ambulance rapid response vehicle, officer and crew.
