There are heavy delays on the A602 between Hitchin and Stevenage after a car broke down on the carriageway between the two towns.

The vehicle, a blue Saab, broke down near the hamlet of Ashbrook shortly before 1pm – with police called to the scene at 1.28pm.

There is now only single-lane traffic at the scene, with long tailbacks all the way back to Stevenage for motorists heading towards Hitchin.

Drivers heading east towards Stevenage are queued up all the way back along Stevenage Road and Park Way to the roundabout with Paynes Park, with Park Street also affected where it meets the Three Moorhens roundabout.

Officers remain at the scene. Recovery arrived at 2.19, and is now dealing with the broken-down Saab.
