Hertfordshire County Council is urging residents to prepare for winter by getting any necessary medication and stocking up on essential supplies before the Christmas holidays start.

The council is urging Hertfordshire residents to check on vulnerable people as temperatures plummet.

The impact of falling temperatures is felt most by older people, who are particularly vulnerable during cold weather, and residents are urged to make sure their elderly relatives and friends are warm and safe.

Checking in on people, asking if they have enough food, making sure they have all the medicine they need and getting them help if necessary can be a lifeline for older or vulnerable residents living alone.

It does not need to take a lot of time, and a quick chat can help combat loneliness.

Colette Wyatt-Lowe, cabinet member for adult care and health at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “We are all affected by very cold weather, which can be particularly difficult for vulnerable residents such as elderly people, the very young and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

“While much of the advice on how to keep warm and well is common sense, it’s important to recognise that some people will find these things difficult to do without help.

“So, whether it’s an elderly neighbour, relative or someone you know who is not in best of health, take time to think about how you might be able to help them to stay healthy this winter.”
