Two bridges linking Letchworth and Baldock are set to be closed at the same time for complete refurbishment.
Baldock Lane in Letchworth will be closed 24 hours a day from Wednesday as Herts County Council carry out a complete revamp of the bridge deck and carriageway over the A1(M).
Working conditions permitting, the bridge will reopen on Friday until Norton Road bridge repairs are complete. Emergency access will be available.
Norton Road in Baldock has been closed since March 5 and will now remain closed until June 29 due to “unforseen engineering difficulties,” says HCC Highways.
According to engineers Volker Fitzpatrick, waterproofing on both bridges is no longer effective – which has caused water damage and corrosion to the bridge bearings. Work will involve removing the road surface to replace the old waterproofing.
