A motorist was taken to hospital yesterday after a crash on the A505 near Hitchin that left a car on its roof.

The collision, which happened at about 11am on the carriageway out of Hitchin towards Luton, involved a white Peugeot van and sent the overturned blue Honda Jazz through the central reservation and onto the opposite carriageway.

The driver of the overturned car was taken by ambulance to Stevenage’s Lister Hospital. Police said the motorist was not thought to be seriously injured.

Police put in temporary lane closures for more than an hour, fully reopening the Hitchin-bound carriageway at midday and the Luton-bound carriageway at 12.40pm.

• An earlier version of this article said, based on information initially provided by police, that it was the van rather than the car that went through the reservation and onto the opposite carriageway.
