A driver escaped unharmed after crashing into the river at Walkern in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The emergency services were called to the junction of Walkern High Street and Benington Road where it crosses the River Beane at 4.25am where a black Volkswagen Touareg had crashed through signs and into the water.

The male driver was out of the vehicle and walking towards Watton-at-Stone when three fire crews, a water rescue unit, and police officers arrived.

The 4x4 was recovered shortly after 7.30am.
