Residents living on two housing estates are having to flag down buses because there is no designated area for them to stop.

A bus route which has been redirected through the Greenacres and Meadow Brook housing estates in Stolfold is causing confusion, as there are no bus stops.

The bus route 96 and 96a, which services the towns of Letchworth GC, Arlesey and Stotfold, is operated by Arriva and was recently revised to take buses through Valerian Way to the Norton Road roundabout, but no one knows where the buses stop.

Cllr Larry Stoter, of Stotfold Town Council, said: “It’s just not clear. Bus stops with timetables would help people to use it; even temporary bus stops might help.

“There was information that you could just wave the buses down, but no one seems to know what is happening.”

Jon Rundle, 37, has lived in Valerian Way for three years. He said: “I noticed they had started to run the buses about a month ago. We just see the buses go up and down but there is no information and no bus stops.”

A spokesman for Arriva said the sections along Tansey Drive and Valerian Way are officially registered as ‘hail and ride’ sections of this route.

“In hail and ride sections drivers are expected to stop when requested by a passenger,” the spokesman said.

“They should stop at the closest safe place to where you have requested.

“As the housing estate is still being developed this will probably stay like this for the foreseeable future. Once the estate is complete the council will then work with us, the police and the community to establish the best location for official bus stops.”
