The lanes were closed on the southbound carriageway between junction 9 for Letchworth Gate and 8 for Stevenage following the crash, which occurred at around 7.45am.

Six vehicles were involved – a white Ford Transit van, a blue Citroen DS3, a grey Toyota Avensis, a silver Volkswagen Golf, a blue Mercedes C220 and a grey Ford Fiesta.

A woman in her 20s had to be cut free from her Citroen and was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage with minor injuries.

She made a “miraculous escape” according to an ambulance service spokesman.
