Emergency services were called to Hermitage Road just before 6pm following the collision, with police shutting the road in both directions.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said three ambulances and two rapid response cars were called to the scene after a two-car crash. Other reports suggest more cars – potentially up to five – were involved.

Three people were taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage – two with spinal injuries – but the spokesman added none were believed to be in a life-threatening condition.

The cars were later recovered.
