A SCHEME to spend 1.25m on improvements to a town centre has been given the go ahead.

North Herts District Council announced today (Tuesday) that a Business Improvement District in Hitchin has the backing of shops in the town.

Over 600 ballot papers were sent out to businesses in the town by Hitchin Town Centre Initiative to see if they would get behind a scheme to pool funds to improve the shopping area.

Out of the 292 votes cast, 204 were in favour, a resounding success for the BID.

Amongst the aims of the plan are dedicated cleaners, 'street rangers' and upgraded CCTV.
