A Baldock family is set to remember their household patriarch with a charity football match, raffle and auction in aid of the hospice which cared for him in his last days.

The charity day in aid of Garden House Hospice Care in Letchworth is being held in memory of Simon Wright, who died from cancer last year at the age of 58.

Family and friends will take to the field in Simon’s memory, with money raised through the participating players, gate sales and the auction and raffle ticket sales.

The raffle and auction have a footballing flavour, with Tottenham, Arsenal and Luton items up for grabs – but there are prizes on offer for non-football fans too, from golf to massages to days at the races.

“The hospice was so good to us in the last days my dad was there,” said David Wright, who at 36 is the eldest of Simon’s three sons.

“They’re fantastic in the things that they do.

“My dad played football for many years, and what he always used to do was to have an annual football get-together with his friends.

“What we’re trying to do here is to do something similar to help the hospice and all they do. We thought it only right after appreciating the time and effort they gave us.”

The raffle tickets will all be sold on the day, and David and his brothers Paul and Martin have decided to put three of the best prizes up for auction.

The auction items are a hospitality package at a Tottenham Hotspur home match for four people, two tickets for a British Touring Car weekend at Silverstone, and a four-ball round of golf at Chesfield Downs in Graveley.

The raffle prizes include a signed Arsenal team photo, a signed Luton Town shirt, tickets to the races at Newmarket and Huntingdon, afternoon tea for two at the Letchworth Hall and a pair of tickets to the Broadway Cinema.

Other prizes are a laptop, massages at Sports Therapy 4U and Jayne Miles Health & Beauty Salon, and a haircut at Mick’s Barbers.

The match at the Baldock Arena will start at 3pm on Saturday, June 18, with the raffle draw starting afterwards at 5.30pm. The bar will be open after the game as well.

David said all are welcome to come support on the day. Entry will be £3 each, with children getting in free. Raffle tickets will be £5 per strip.
