Police are hunting for thieves who broke into a Stevenage petrol station on Monday night and made off with hundreds of pounds worth of cigarettes.

The burglary took place at the Tesco petrol station in London Road between 10.15pm and 10.30pm – shortly after closing at 10pm – when an unknown number of offenders broke a panel on the outside of the petrol station to get inside. They made off with hundreds of pounds worth of cigarettes, with employees making the discovery yesterday morning.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and have urged anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw what happened, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously, to contact them on 101 quoting crime reference number E1/16/6447.

Anyone who has been offered cigarettes for sale in suspicious circumstances should also call police.
