Has been working in partnership with Mid Beds District Council and Bedfordshire Police to make an order to restrict the consumption of alcohol on public roads and open spaces. Police officers will have the power to confiscate alcohol or alcohol containers (other than sealed containers) from persons within the areas covered by the order. Failure to comply with the surrender of alcohol request is an arrestable offence. Signs will be erected on the roads and public areas to which this order applies. As an indication the area envelopes the town as follows: Starting at the Hitchin Road recreation ground, over the crossroads along Regent Street, The Green, along Little London footpath to the Riverside Playing Fields. Turning left back along Malthouse Lane/Queen Street, up to the High Street. The length of Baldock Road is covered and the High Street from the junction of Queen Street back to the crossroads completes the envelope - the area around to Coop Stores is also covered. All roads and open spaces contained within the envelope are covered. It is not possible to place a blanket order across the whole town and the areas covered were identified by the police as where most of the problems occur. A complete list of roads and areas may be obtained from the Town Council office. The Council hopes that by placing this order, the quality of life for a great number of residents will be improved.
