A CAMPAIGNER for pensioners' rights has warned that lives are being put at risk because a bus parking area is too small.

Ken Lynch, chairman of the Biggleswade and District Pensioners' Association, says the parking bay in front of the new shelter in Sandy Market Place is not big enough for three buses.

When three arrive at the same time the last bus always sticks out into the High Street making it difficult and dangerous to cross the busy road on foot, says Mr Lynch.

"The bus parking is a never ending problem and has got so bad someone is going to get killed unless it is sorted out," said Mr Lynch of Pyms Way, Sandy.

"If three buses arrive all at once then the last one sticks out into the main road and causes a serious problem for adults and children who want to cross the road.

"If this situation goes on lives are being put at risk.

"It is a very, very busy town centre and the town council should do something now.

"I have complained to the town council, the county council and the police and I just hope they are listening to what I am saying. Has someone got to get killed before something is done?

"Hopefully, drivers using this stop will be made aware of the problem by the bus operators."

Sandy Town Council says enlarging the current area for bus parking is impossible and would mean demolishing shops.

"We know what Mr Lynch is saying but there is nothing the town council can do," said town council clerk Trevor Stewart.

"The new bus stop has been moved further along the road so every effort has been made to resolve this problem.

"Finding more space would mean having to knock down two shops.

"Over £200,000 has been spent on the town centre enhancement scheme, the shelter has been replaced and moved and people have just got to accept the difficulties when three buses arrive at the same time, which is not very often, and be careful.
