A Stevenage Borough Council tenant has been evicted from their property after it was discovered they were illegally renting it out.

The council acted after it received information that the person was not living in the one-bedroom property in Symonds Green but was subletting it to someone else.

Councillor Ann Webb, who is responsible for housing at the council, said: “They are using up valuable housing spaces and depriving families and vulnerable people on the housing waiting list.

“I want to reassure our valued tenants that we will not tolerate tenancy fraud.”

Anyone can report suspected tenancy fraud by emailing tenancyfraud@stevenage.gov.uk or by visiting the council’s customer service centre in Danestrete.
