TEACHERS in England and Wales are one step closer to getting a 2.5 per cent pay rise later this year.

Education and Skills Secretary Ruth Kelly confirmed she would implement the recommendations of the School Teachers Review Body (STRB), which also proposed a 2.5 per cent increase in September 2007.

A number of other pay-related matters will also be given attention.

Ms Kelly said: "I believe that this pay award is fair on the basis of the arguments put forward by the STRB in respect of the need both to recruit and to retain teachers at a time of change.

"I also believe it to be fair in terms of the relationship between teachers' pay and that of others in the labour market. This settlement will form the backdrop to our plans to continue to improve the way teachers work.
