It’s not every day you get a greetings card from the Queen, but that memorable piece of mail arrived for Fred and Edna Williams as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last Thursday.

The couple enjoyed a tea party with family and friends at Truro Court care home in Stevenage.

Hailing from London, the couple moved to the sheltered housing complex in Canterbury Way to be near their daughter Brenda Dalton two years ago.

Brenda told the Comet: “I just think it’s absolutely amazing. For anybody to reach that milestone is just incredible.”

Fred, now 87, was born in Tilbury and worked as a maintenance man. He met Edna, 88, a tailoress from Stepney, at a working men’s club in Rainham in Essex and they married in East London on March 10, 1956.
