Letchworth will swing to the sound of the ’60s next weekend to raise funds for two important causes.

March of the Mods – which has been running up and down the UK since 2012 – is now coming to Letchworth for the first time, with four bands and two DJs all performing without pay.

The gig at the Four Emblems Club on Saturday next week is in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Kingfisher Club, which helps people affected by dementia in North Herts.

The Letchworth event has been put together by two keen ’60s fans – Gary Grindal and Leon Hewitt, guitarist of Stevenage freakbeat rockers the Mynd Set.

Gary said: “I’ve long wanted to put on a gig in Letchworth as it seems that there, disappointingly, is no desire from the Letchworth bars and pubs to give local musicians and groups a chance to play.

“I then thought if I’m going to do this, let’s do it for a good cause – and I’m delighted that our Letchworth gig will not only be raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust, but the Kingfisher Club as well.

“Thanks to Leon, we’ve got four great Herts-based bands and two DJs, all giving their time for nothing – and thanks for the Four Emblems Club, we have a great venue to hold our event.

“This is a great opportunity for mods, fans of ’60s music, and anyone who just wants to help support these very good causes to come together for what’s going to be a fantastic night.”

The gig echoes the annual Teenage Cancer Trust concert at the Royal Albert Hall, which has long been supported by Mod icons the Who.

Performing alongside the Mynd Set will be the Zebras, the RSGs and the Sonic Jewels, with vinyl-spinning DJs AB and Ali.

The March of the Mods is on Saturday, March 25, from 7.30pm at the Four Emblems Club in Station Road. Tickets are £5 on the door or from David’s Music in Eastcheap
