A Letchworth man who drank, then stole a van and crashed it has been given a suspended sentence.

Hatfield magistrates heard that Mark Howes, of Pascal Way, had been drinking before he stole the Vauxhall Combo van in Icknield Way – for which he in any case had no licence to drive – on January 9.

And chairman of the bench Arun Sharma sentenced him to 16 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, also banning him from the road for three years.

Howes, 31, was furthermore ordered to undergo six months of alcohol dependency treatment and to fulfil a rehabilitation activity requirement.

He had pleaded guilty to stealing the van, driving without insurance and driving without a licence, as well as failing to give blood for testing while in custody, and failing to appear in court to answer bail on February 7.
