Sunday afternoon rail services through Letchworth have been disrupted in the wake of an incident which is still being investigated.

Representatives of Network Rail, British Transport Police and the East of England Ambulance Service have been on the scene since around 2pm.

An air ambulance crew was called to the scene and it is understood that one person has been taken to hospital for treatment, but the extent of their injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Train operator Great Northern warned: “Emergency services are dealing with an incident near Letchworth, causing delays of up to 80 minutes to journeys between Hitchin and Cambridge. This is expected to continue until 5.45pm.”

But in an update posted at just after 3pm, British Transport Police said that the incident had now been cleared and services were running normally.

Update: An ambulance spokesman has confirmed two crews, an ambulance officer and East Anglian Air Ambulance attended to treat the man, who had suffered a suspected broken pelvis and leg.

He was taken by land ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for further treatment.
