A Baldock volunteer was recognised for 22 years of service to Sue Ryder as part of Volunteers’ Week.

Joan Garrett began volunteering at the Sue Ryder shop in Whitehorse Street in 1996. After losing her husband she decided the needed a new challenge to help with her grief.

She started working one morning per week on the till, and became a known by customers for her friendly manner.

Now aged 87, Joan still dedicates her time to the store each week. She said: “I love my role at the Sue Ryder Baldock shop – it is down to the friendly atmosphere here that I have volunteered for so long.”

Joan was presented with an award by shop manager Deborah Harwood during Volunteers’ Week – which ran until Thursday – in recognition of her incredible contribution.

During her years at the store, Joan will have helped raise thousands of pounds for the charity which provides care for people living with life-changing conditions.
