AN exhibition reflecting how Biggleswade will cope with increased transport during the coming century was on show at the town council offices this week.

The Biggleswade Transport Study 2006 compiled by Bedfordshire County Council, reflects the issues facing the town which is due to expand by 40 per cent over the next 10 years.

Proposals include a managed parking zone in the town centre with a structured charging system to free up parking spaces for shoppers.

It is also proposed to introduce residents-only parking in some areas, which would involve annual payments of between £25 and £50 for resident.

The county council says the vitality and viability of Biggleswade town centre needs to be improved.

The county says if the Bonds Lane development proceeds with a new link road between Hitchin Street and Station Road, it would reverse the traffic flows in Hitchin Street to improve access to the town centre and to reduce congestion. Other proposals include improving safety facilities at the town centre bus terminus, changed corner kerb lines for easier bus turning movements, better defined lanes, CCTV, better timetable displays and real-time information.

The council also wants to promote better use of bicycles and have a network of cycle routes including off-street paths and along some existing streets. The scheme would also involve safe cycle parking in the town centre and public buildings.

Other proposals include enhanced pedestrian safety over the Crab Lane rail bridge and improvements to the junction of London Road and The Baulk.

The county council is now asking residents for their views on the proposals.
